I did find it a bit disturbing that you shot right in on the values of the tiles. To me, the game is all about your relative buying power. If you have the highest sun, you just wanna get the game going, and if you have more low-valued suns, you wanna call out RA as often as possible.
I hope you will do more in-depth podcasts on other games.

I've recently discovered your podcast and did very much appreciate it.
I would say there are 2 solid reasons for this :
1/ You spend time on what really matters to me : game "in depth" presentation, discussions on gameplay, game strategies
2/ I would say we're on the same line regarding type of games that you appreciate. The example of this show on Ra is a good example of it and you persuaded me to raise the mark I gave it on BGG from 9 to 10.
As I'm talking about Ra, I would like to answer your question by saying that I have a natural tendency to focus on "civ tiles" which I try to reduce. I would usually fight for Pharaos from the start of the game and make sure I always get 1 civ per turn.
As you did, I played quite a few games online and I learnt from it that if you consider a lot that is better than average, you have to pay the price. Because of the disasters, waiting for ever for the perfect lot that match your high tile power is rarely paying off.
Now, I would like to comment a little more your podcast and maybe make a request.
What I do like :
* The show on 1 game. I like what you did on Ra and Amun Re. I would even say I prefer this format to the standard one. It's really "by geeks for the geeks" and help share knowledge and new strategies.
* The smart questions asked to all 3 players. I really think it's a nice way to discuss various aspects of a single game.
* The "victory points" : as you do, I like the play on words but I also like the 3 levels type of comments you made on Samurai.
What I like less :
* The fact that you're not setting on Itunes. I like to have the small text, logo and ease of use to download it from Itunes. I wish you could arrange for it.
* The funny "acting" passage at the end of one of your show. Maybe this is because I am foreign but I am not really getting it (when you learn a language, getting the puns is the last bit you'll keep on struggling for). Besides, I am really not looking for such elements.
* The numerous mentions of online gaming. I do play online but I like to think about boardgames as a social activity. I know that :
1/ It's easier to set up an online game than organise a game session at home (especially when you reach the 30's and after).
2/ That's where you really get to learn a game as you manage to practice multiple times those games (and therefore learn those fancy strategies).
I don't mind all of this but It makes me a little sad to hear that your game of the month has only been played online (I would rather hear more about the only "physical game session" you had, knowing that you have practiced a lot the game online). I know it sounds somehow hypocrit but I don't know how to describe it otherwise.
Finally, I came to your site from a geeklist talking about Tigris & Euphrates, on which one of you was saying that it was one of his favorite games (even if it does not appear on the homonymous podcast episode). I would really enjoy to listen to a "in depth" podcast session around this masterpiece (there is a nice one online from another podcast, but it's spending a little too much time on the rules and not enough time on the strategy to my taste).
Anyway, I hope that "The metagamers" will go on for a while. At least, I can tell you that I'll come by regularly.
Regards,
-- Guillaume

Just to address your issue with online gaming:
Since we don't live near each other, many of out shared game experiences are online. Of course we play often off-line with our normal gaming groups as well. Personally I have played Ra about 20 times face to face.
The point you bring up about learning about the games online is a good one as well. It just so happens that the games we are best equipped to talk about at length are the ones that we've played many times online.
Anyway, we appreciate the comments and critisism, and we are always trying to get better.
I'm sure Jay will be by soon to smack you around for dissing his baby (the comedy skit) :) It's a board game take on an old Monty Python sketch.
It's just that I like to think that an online game is good for training but that the real pleasure of gaming come from face-to-face.
About the "Monthy Python" thing, I just didn't get the trick (I would have if english was my mother tongue). As you're doing funny accents, puns and modulate speed of speech to create "effects", you may lose some of those listeners whose mother tongue is not english.
Anyway, it's only 5mn over a 70mn episode and it's located right at the end. So, once again, it is a minor comment.
Don't take me wrong : I really enjoyed listening to your episodes. I used to listen regularly to the Dice Tower but the game preferences of Tom Vasel are just so different from mine.

I have briefly commented on your show before, but I would like to add a few lines, because in the meantime I have gone deeper into the game and have successfully introduced a few new players to Ra. The online play is a blast, but I have already ordered the boxed version to have the ability to play face-to-face. I imagine that even with all that hustle around the board and (what seems to be) tedious scoring, I will enjoy Ra even more, because f2f games are far superior to games with GUI. You cannot even compare the two.
Anyway, thank's for sheding the light and encouraging me to play this fabulous game. Without your input, I think I would skip this title and consequently I would lose so much enjoyment.
Keep the podcasts coming.
